"That took forever," Noriko complained, looking at the finally finished jar of medicinal cream. It certainly did feel like it had been ages since they began the project, and Elizabeth couldn't fault the child for growing a bit restless.
"Yes, but look what you've accomplished," she told her young student soothingly. "I'll bet Dr. Jekyll won't be able to tell the difference between your cream and the cream I've made him in the past."
"Can we take it to him now?" Noriko appeared suitably mollified by the praise, and even seemed to become more enthusiastic once again. Clearly, she was anxious to test the doctor's ability to recognize any differences between the product of the master and the novice.
"All right. Rodney? Will you join us?"
"Thanks, love, but I think I'll head for me own quarters for a spell. Smellin' all these herbs has made me a mite sleepy; think I'm due for a bit of a lie-in. You girls go on and have fun." Skinner stood, kissed Elizabeth's cheek, and gave Noriko's head a fond pat before disappearing in a flurry of leather and greasepaint.
"Looks like it will just be ourselves, then. All right....put the lid on firmly. That's it. Now pick it up very carefully. You've got it? Very good. Let's go show the doctor what you've learned." Smiling, Elizabeth led the way from her cabin to the infirmary.

FYI -- this coming Friday afternoon, I am being abducted and forced to visit the state of Maryland. It's Kevin's birthday and we're going down to the Annapolis area to visit his brother, which is how he decided he'd like to spend his birthday this year (just like last year). I'll be back sometime Sunday evening. Move Nemo, Elizabeth, and Black Sun around as needed; I'm reachable by cell phone.

Tom couldn’t help but smile, glancing down at Kitten affectionately as Peter said why he suspected she was so eager to learn. He wanted to be able to talk with her better as well, but he didn’t want to make her feel as though she was being pressured. She had been through a lot in her life, after all, and he didn’t want to rush her in anything.
“Well, there’s no one else to teach her, really. Captain Nemo obviously has other responsibilities, and the only other people who can talk with Kitten are the crew; they all have their duties on the ship, so you’d be doing us all a favour.” It wouldn’t hurt to give Kitten a new ‘friend’ either; help her broaden her horizons of people she could talk with, and feel as if she could trust. True, Tom didn’t trust Peter himself yet, but it was possible he was just being paranoid.

"She seems very willing to learn, not least becasue I feel she wishes to talk to you better," Peter answered, giving Tom a genuine smile. He gathered up the books around him, mentally marking off which would be usful in the coming days. Until they reached London, Peter had little to do and he was quickly finding himself bored despite the grand number of books to read - you could only read so many books.
"I admit, it was partly selfish reasons that I ask. I am at rather a loose end and it would keep me occurpied."

It was no secret that Tom had a few trust issues, no matter how hard he tried to conceal them. Recent events hadn’t exactly helped with that, he knew; he just hoped it all ‘blew over’ before it could get any worse. The optimist in him was telling him that things could only get better… the realist, on the other hand, had other ideas.
“Kitten could use the familiarity of someone who understands her,” Tom agreed, nodding his head thoughtfully. Just because Tom had been the type to want to avoid education when he was Kitten’s age, that didn’t mean she should be denied the simple rights that all children deserved; to be taught and understood… to learn. “And I appreciate the effort.”

"I know a fair bit of the supernatural kind," Peter agreed slowly, sensing the relutnace and the surpision. It would seem as if he would have to work hard to gain any sort of trust here. But that was fine, Peter was used to working to prove himself and indeed he felt almost comftable doing so.
"I could contiune to teach Kitten if you do not mind?" he offered. "Simple math skills, basic geograhy, english... I wish to help and she seems to take to lessons."

Tom wasn’t about to tell Peter that he would be suspicious of the specialist either way; Holmes had sent him, and for all Tom knew, the shorter man was there to gather information on what the League did away from watchful eyes. But he wasn’t about to say anything that would seem counterproductive to an ‘alliance’. If Peter wanted to be useful, then he could do whatever he wished, so long as it didn’t rock whatever remained of the calm within the League.
“You said you’re a specialist,” Tom began, studying Peter from his place. “We could always use someone who’s up on their books, if you catch my meaning.” It was an invitation, almost, albeit a vague one at best. “My brother can manage well enough, but they do say two heads are better than one.”

"Mr. Holmes sent me with the intention of joining the League yes," Peter addmitted after a moment. "However, to arrive to late to help with the Vampire... and I do not know how usful I will be in coming battles. I only wish you to know that I shall do my utmost to earn my place, and not be here simply becasue Mr. Holmes wishes it..." he hesitated for a moment, before deciding to gamble.
"If you and Mrs. Harker however are admient that I shall prove usless to the League I shall leave without fuss and shall see to it that Mr. Holmes does not complain. I cannot guarteen that he will not simply send another in my place." He did not add that another may be less 'soft' and thus libable to casue them grife later on. It would do no good to worry the blond agent and would only serve to make him view Peter himself with suspision.

Smiling at the child after glancing to Peter in acknowledgement of his statement, Tom stroked back Kitten’s hair again. “Kitten make Tom proud,” he told her with a nod. If he was going to be honest with himself — even if it was probably very obvious to anyone who saw the two ‘siblings’ together — nothing Kitten did would ever upset Tom; he couldn’t harbour anything but love for her, even if he tried. Not that he wanted to feel anything but love for the little girl who had, quite literally, saved his life.
“So, Peter…” he began slowly, looking to the shorter man once again, “I’m guessing here; correct me if I’m wrong, but… would I be right in assuming Holmes wants you to join the League?” It wasn’t a stretch — he could only imagine the lengths Holmes would go to in order to have an insider on the team.

"She deserves to be happy, at any rate," Peter said quietly, almost to himself. With this conversation, he found that his mind was made up and for the first time in the history of his emyloment with Mr. Holmes he would do what he believed was right, not what Mr. Holmes wanted.
There was no need for him to find out about the child, since he would most probally try and take her, resulting only in more pain and fear for the girl, even if he failed - and with this lot protecting her, fail he would. It would also however, strain relationships between the League and Mr. Holmes even more so, something Peter was keen to avoid. All the more reason for him to keep quiet.
Kitten smiled back at Tom, happy to be with her brother again.
